In what is the first revelation of its kind from the Pakistani entertainment industry, powerhouse singer and actress Meesha Shafi has just spoken out about harrowing sexual harassment by one of her peers, Ali Zafar.
In a shocking tweet, Meesha opened up about how she finally found the strength to speak up.
Meesha went on to say that despite having a voice, and having the unconditional love and support of her family and fans, it was very difficult for her to speak up about her experience.
In her statement, she says the multiple instances of harassment did not happen when she was young or entering the industry but when she was already an established artist and a mother of two.
She went on to say that she hopes her disclosure encourages other women to speak up too. ‘We only have our voices and the time has come to use them.’
Meesha’s revelation comes at time when women around the world are finding their voice to rise up against sexual harassment in the #MetToo campaign. In Pakistan, celebrities like Freiha Altaf, Nadia Jamil and Maheen Khan have previously shared their stories but this will be the first time that a celebrity has opened up against another industry peer.
Speaking to a leading daily, Meesha’s mother, actress Saba Hamid has said that she supports her daughter’s decision to come out in the open about Ali Zafar.
Ali Zafar is one of the biggest names in the Pakistani entertainment industry and has in the past supported various causes including speaking up for other celebrities like Mahira Khan so this accusation comes as a deeply disappointing shock.
We are still waiting for a statement on the issue from Ali Zafar.
